Maybe ItalyJumper knows a bit about it, but he just got married so he may be a bit hard to track down.

Would you mind sending a copy to me? Perhaps for future use if somebody is in need.

No, the AER loan is from Army Emergency Relief. It's an interest free loan, and as the name implies, for Emergencies. Here's a good link to what you can and can not use it for.

Here is Part III (Summary of Counseling) for the DA 4856 thanks to another member from another board.

PVT Tentpeg, you are being counseled regarding your request for AER assistance. While it is not a negative action to receive AER assistance, there are certainly some things that you should be aware of. Accepting an AER loan is not a grant; you will be required to pay back the amount of any loan that you receive. While receiving an AER loan may help you in the short term, it is not a solution to your present diifficulty.

PVT Tentpeg, I am concerned that you need a loan from AER. Be advised that this is and can be a one time event only; further financial assistance from AER will not be available. You will have to settle your accounts if you get a loan.

PVT Tentpeg, if you get a loan from AER, you will be in a position possibly more difficult then you are facing now. Do not jeopardize your present position or your homelife. You are no longer on your own, but are responsible for others, now. Think of your family.

Your duty to me will now be to keep me advised of your financial situation. Any financial diffulcuties will be reported to me immediately. AER assistance is a one time help. There is no second chance with AER.

Ok I remember something about that. None of my Joes ever used it but somebody in our company did when family died or something. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
