You all have hearts the size of Texas. All of this support has left me speechless.

Through your selfless efforts, an enormous weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I am forever grateful and indebted.

The VA has done a wonderful job taking care of me. I've heard many horror stories about their poor management and disregard of veterans' well being but I am happy to report I have not witnessed anything of the sort during my months of treatment. They get an A+ from me.

By the way, I'll do my best trying to convince the doctors to take pics of the transplant. I think the biggest obstacle will be getting one of the nurses to pose topless for added effect.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I regret being ignorant of some medical knowledge.

If you mean type matching for blood products during the operation, I'm pretty certain I'll be covered.

When I reach the top of the list, I will be living (on the VA's tab) near the transplant facility. When a donor dies from a traumatic accident, the organs will be harvested and the liver will be expedited to the facility. The transplant team will call me on the cell phone they will provide for me, tell me to stay put, and they will come & pick me up & transport me for surgery.

Matching blood types is only the beginning. An organ stays put in the body, and so for an organ transplant to work, the donor and recipient have to be as close a genetic match as possible. This involves the chromosomes of the cells and figuring out how compatable they are.

If you imagine that each person on the planet is a particular, unique jigsaw puzzle, and you tried to replace some pieces of one puzzle with some pieces from someone else's puzzle you have some idea of the complexity involved in finding a decent match. L J and his liver could be seen as a picture of a Paratrooper, handsome and suave - that's pretty accurate, right? ;) The donor's genetic code (their puzzle) would have a different picture, different sized pieces, different pattern to the shapes... but it would have to be sort of close in order to work.

Prayers go out for wisdom for the doctors, and good success.

I apologize for the confusion. I need a new liver. And you definitely need yours.

You sir, epitomize selflessness for offering one of your kidneys. I wish I was lucky enough to only need a kidney transplant.

A defective liver, over time, drains your whole body. You break down in almost all departments. You lose a lot of weight, you get arthritis, your bones deteriorate, your brain becomes confused, you become fatigued, weak, and so on, etc.

I wasn't going to post this but to hell with it - this is the difference in about 10-12 months of your liver beginning to fail.

On the left, I'm pink, fat and happy - on the right (taken about 36 hours ago) I'm significantly drawn down, jaundiced, and under-weight.

After a successful liver transplant, I will go back to what I looked like in the first picture (taken about 11 months ago).

Roger. I was told that I need a whole new liver - that there is no hope for the one I currently own.

Besides, you know the military - if something doesn't work right , DX the whole thing.
