Default A Little Story From Basic

WARNING: No Adrenalin or testosterone based action in the following:

This dates back to Basic Training at Fort Dix. Basic was almost over. And as memory serves right, Graduation was only a couple of days away.

I was looking out the window of my room down to the paved area when we held Formation. And as I was looking down I saw that it had just started to rain. As the rain fell I saw where the pavement would get darker as a raindrop fell on it. One spot and then another, drop by drop the pavement got darker. I decided to watch until the entire area was completely wet. Now it didn’t rain very hard, nor was it anything like a drizzle. It just…plain…rained. And it was decently fascinating watching the pavement slowly turn dark, raindrop after raindrop. And slowly it was harder and harder to find dry patches of asphalt. Eventually the entire place was soaked. I pulled back my focus and in essence thought, “Wow! It’s really wet out there!” Having thought that I instantly thought, “Of course it’s wet out there! It’s raining!”

After a while the Drill Sergeants called us and the day continued.

You should have put a stolen time disclaimer at the beginning!

What year were you at Dix? I took Basic there in July/August of '75. It rained then too.

I remember a rainy day at Ft Campbell. It was September of 71, and I had just come back from Nam with the 173rd.

Now, only those that have been to Vietnam know real rain. Endless rain that goes on for days, and everything you own in your rucksack is soaking wet. After a while, you just live with it.

I was walking to main post, in fatigues, when it started raining like a motherfucker. Everybody ran for cover, except me. I just kept on walking.
People stared at me like I was crazy. But I just kept on walking like it was a fine summer day. Fuck rain, it don't mean nuthin!

I was high........high on the fact that I was walking in the rain in America, and not in the jungles of Vietnam. No worries about getting shot at. Just enjoying a fine summer rain in Kentucky. Who cares if my boots were filled with water.

And the rain also hid the tears of joy streaming down my face.

When I got to the snack bar I casually walked in , soaking wet, with a big smile on my face. I know everyone looked at me like I was nuts, and could not comprehend that big smile on my face. :D
