    Default Question about DEP.

I was talking to my recruiter last week and he mentioned that when you go into the DEP and swear in and all that, you're just swearing in to the DEP and not actually the Army and that if you were to go that whole year without shipping and just didn't go, you would be under no legal obligations to make you do it. He even said some recruiter got in trouble awhile ago for saying you'd go to jail if you backed out. I wasn't sure if he was just blowing smoke up my ass because my dad wanted to know if I were to sign my papers now and have a ship date months later, that if I decided I didn't want to do it, I'd be able to back out. Thanks in advance.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I should have my contract signed in about a month! :D

Don't take a slot away from someone who isn't planning on quitting and actually wants to make the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen a little stronger.

It's true, you can back out without legal trouble, just don't expect to be looked at with respect by anyone who ever followed through on their promise to serve.
    If not you then who?

Why tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at deaths door?

Here's a novel concept...Say what you mean and mean what you say. If you say that you are willing to commit to something then stick with it.

Here's an easy way to look at it. DEEDS NOT WORDS

Lo, there do I see my father. Lo, there do I see my mother, my sisters, and my brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people, Back to the beginning! Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla! Where the brave may live forever!

I have absolutley no intention of not going through with this. I want this more than anything right now, I was just wondering if it was true. Thanks for the answers and sorry about the misunderstanding.

When I was in recruiter school, they showed me a regulation that shows that you can be persued like an awol soldier, where it is, I can't remember but if I can find it, I will post it.

The most important thing to remember is you are requesting a position with the finest men and women in the United States, the lineage and honor of serving the greatest country in the world, the ability to have your name in the history books; some people read history while others make it. You have to ask yourself something, do you want to be part of this team? It is one thing to eat at the varsity table with the cheerleaders, wear the lettermans jacket, and have the bragging rights but do want to earn the right? If you want to live the rest of your life with no regret, sign up and do what your recruiter tells you to get promoted and prepare for basic. Don't worry about the backing out part, ask is the Army going to back out on me (of course the Army won't).

I've met lots of "shoppers" out here in Recruiting Land, guys and gals who don't have the gonads to step up and say "Yes" too serving their country. Some of them like to feel good about themselves that they "checked it out" or didn't even have the spine to tell me they weren't interested in the first place. Occasionally though, I run in to young men and women who do display a level of understanding about a world larger than themselves and are willing to commit to greater ideals. If you are sincere about your desire to serve your country and to contribute, I say thank you. If you DEP loss, well, thats another story....(a sad, pathetic tale of oxygen thievery and such.) My point is this: the only thing worse than an 18 year old man that DOESN'T like guns and blowing shit up, is that same 18 year old who ties up a perfectly good slot for some OTHER kid who does.

here's a tale of a young Recruiter who knew the inner workings of the MEPS.

Johnny wanted to join the Army. He joins, then while he's waiting to ship he decides maybe he doesn't want to join the Army. So he backs out and doesn't ship.

A few years later, Johnny decides he wants to try again with another service. When his recruiter SPFs his data... he finds out that Johnny has been permanently disqualified from joining any service because some medical documents for an ailment that Johnny never had found their way to the MEPS doctor.
