Default Beer Can or Coke Can Chicken with BBQ Rub

    Q) Why did the chicken cross the road? A) Because it couldn't remember where it left its beer

    1 (4-pound) whole chicken
    2 tablespoons EV Olive oil
3 tablespoons of your favorite dry spice rub(see all purpose rub below)
    1 can beer or coke

Remove neck and giblets from chicken and discard. Rinse chicken inside and out, and pat dry with paper towels. Rub chicken lightly with oil then rub inside and out with salt, pepper and dry rub. Set aside.
Open beer can and take several gulps (make them big gulps so that the can is half full). Place beer can on a solid surface. Grabbing a chicken leg in each hand, plunk the bird cavity over the beer can.( You can get a handy chicken stand from Wal-Mart) Transfer the bird-on-a-can to your grill and place in the center of the grate, balancing the bird on its 2 legs and the can like a tripod.
Cook the chicken over medium-high, indirect heat (i.e. no coals or burners on directly under the bird), with the grill cover on, for approximately 1 1/4 hours or until the internal temperature registers 165 degrees F in the breast area and 180 degrees F in the thigh, or until the thigh juice runs clear when stabbed with a sharp knife. Remove from grill and let rest for 10 minutes before carving.

    All-Purpose Barbecue Rub

There are four basic ingredients-salt, black pepper, paprika, and brown sugar-and by varying the proportions you can create an almost endless variety of flavors. For a spicier rub use hot paprika instead of sweet paprika. You could also substitute granulated sugar, light brown sugar, or Sucanat (powdered evaporated sugarcane juice) for the dark brown sugar. There isn’t a fish that swims, a bird that flies, or a beast that walks that wouldn’t benefit from a generous sprinkling of this multipurpose rub.

1/4 cup coarse salt (kosher or sea)
    1/4 cup dark brown sugar
    1/4 cup sweet paprika
2 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper

Put the salt, brown sugar, paprika, and pepper in a small bowl and stir to mix. (Your fingers actually work better for mixing the rub than a spoon or whisk does.)

Store the rub in an airtight jar away from heat and light; it will keep for at least 6 months.

    Makes about 3/4 cup

I did some similar shit today....

Throw 2-3 cups of hickory wood chips in bowl pour Coors light over it until it is full...
Or until half of the beer is gone so you can drink the other half.
Fill the rest of the bowl with water or urine water being preferred method.
That has to soak 1 hour before the chicken gets thrown on.
Lite the grill up 30 min after soaking giving yourself plenty of time to fumble thru lighting charcoal and drinking a few more beers

While grill is heating up to 200 deg F....
Rub your chicken down with whatever you want.

Take chicken and hickory goodness to grill, ensure coals are dispersed in 2 rows and put chicken in the middle.
Spread out hickory chips and let this go for 90 minutes or 1 Hour 30 Minutes, which ever comes fist.
Check for chicken to be 180 in thigh and cover in your favorite bbq sauce.
Let cook 10 minutes, bring inside and let sit for 10 minutes.

At this point the chicken is hotter then 2 hells so this gives you a few minutes to fix up some other fixings.
I usually just go with beer.....
In fact, you should kill at least a 12 pack in the cooking process...

    OK....I just blasted another bird......

This time, I used the same madness as above, just put coals in a heaping pile...(direct Heat)
Throw chicken on as above, and at 10 minutes start another batch of charcoals in yer bad arse chimney starter.

At 40 min, or when the coals are ready to destroy carcus, remove grill and chicken.
I recommend some type of glove if you do this.
I made it possible to never be finger printed again today.......
Replace grill, chicken and start on another 12 pack of Coors lite, wide open refreshment.
    AHHHH....LIFE IS GOOD....
Anywho..back to the chicken that at 60 min will jsut about be ready.
At this point, the command decision was made (not by me) not to apply small amount of bbq sauce as above but to crisp skin.

Chicken was brought in at 65 min and was allowed to sit for 15 min.
This gave me a chance to ice my wounds and put out the shed which had caught fire....

Also, ROS was on standby during entire meal just encase HH6's other Appendix had to be removed with a hot butter knife...

I fired off a few yard birds with teh Coors mini cans a few months back and it turned out pretty well.
Those birds were juicier that Rosie Odonnell taking a tour of a lesbain run Twinkie factory!

They sell beer can cookers. It's a kit and I don't remember the price. It's a tripod set up and the chicken sets over everything hanging just above the grill.
