I've got a small spider on my left bicep; got it in a house of ill repute in Hong Kong, while on R&R in 1963. I was drunk but sober enough to get the smallest tattoo the guy had. Got me into all kinds of trouble in Jump School in 1965; all the black hats punched me on the arm and said "tried to kill that bug on your arm." Or, I was told to do pushups until the damn bug fell off. Either way, my arm was sore each night in ground week. Ahhh, memories.

Unfortunately there is no salacious "got drunk in Tiajuana" kind of story. The tat is a Dogwood Flower on the left boobage vicinity. There were wild Dogwoods all over the place where I grew up - until the blight took over unfortunately. I've always loved the flower and it had a somewhat spiritual significance to me at the time.

The "whys" are a longer story - the whole midlife thing is a story in itself that usually requires Margaritas. The short version is twofold:

1) I was always the good little Catholic schoolgirl who obeyed the rules, put everyone else first, ignored my own needs, and never rebelled in teenhood (yes, I had a plaid skirt, no, you can't see pictures!). Somewhere around age 37 I had a huge midlife crisis - divorce and med school were part of that - and the tattoo was just another way to throw off that "good girl" past.

2) I already had several large permanent scars - from a sledding accident as a kid and 3 C-sections - and I wanted something permanent on my body that "I" got to choose this time.


Any more story than that requires alcohol.
