    Default Remington 870 Choke selection

    All,

For Christmas, I bought my son a Remington 870(28 inch barrel) that came with a 'MOD' choke and my questions are how/when do I select other chokes to use in the gun?

He'll use it for skeet and dove hunting.

Here are some choke stats. These stats are based on density of shot inside a 30" circle at 40 yds. The greater the concentration of shot within the circle, the smaller the pattern and the more stopping power. Less density has just the opposite effect. Back in my younger years when I was doing a lot of trap shooting and bird hunting I generally used the IC choke. For Ducks & Pheasant, etc, I used Modified, but it really is a matter of personal preference, mainly what someone feels comfortable with.

    Type....................Constriction.............D ensity
    Cylinder (open)...... .000 in.................. 40%
    Skeet.................... .005 in...................53%
    Improved Cylinder. .010 in................... 57%
    Modified................. .020 in................... 67%
    Improved Modified.. .030 in...................73%
    Full choke............... .040 in...................75%

All I have ever used is a modified choke when given a choice. pretty all around all purpose.

Thanks for the advice. Based on the data and advice, I think I will stay with the modified for now.

I own a 870 aswell (best pumpgun hands down).
Modified is the do all choke. For doves and skeet MOD will do just fine.

I use mod for everything except for turkeys.

    Mod choke it is then.

My brother-in-law recommended that we should store the gun with the choke out after it's cleaned.

    Thoughts?

Me personally I have never done that. When I clean my gun&choke tube I just put the choke back in.

what your brother-in-law recommended doesnt seem like a bad idea.
I would think as long as you keep your shit clean either way works.

Just a tip here, if you lose your choke tube wrench a quarter works just as good.

    Edited for spelling.

Dont store it! You still have 2 days to dove hunt, in the South Texas zone. :P

I first clean the threads of the choke and the barrel, then apply anti-seize compound to the threads, then thread the choke in and leave it there. With the anti-seize compound on the threads, the choke will always thread out if necessary.

Start the young man off on modified choke. When he gets confident move him up to full choke.

All I use for birds/clays is full. The added range often makes the difference between a bird in the bag or on the wing.

The theory is that the if stored with the choke installed it will cause moisture on the barrel threads and possibly rust the barrel or seize the choke up inside it. Its bullshit. I've had an 870 for 20 years and I always store it with the choke installed.
Heres a tip on chokes, cylinder for home defense, full for longer ranges or when you need a tight pattern. Modified works well all around. I keep a Mod in my 12 ga. Unless hunting turkey (full) I will not change chokes.
