Tomorrow afternoon I am off for 10 days to Santa Maria (Noxianne) in Mozambique on a fishing trip with a whole bunch of buddies. we have 2 boats and the reports indicate yellow fin Tuna running wild and plenty Couta (king mackerel) Dorado, (dolphin fish) and possibly a chance to land another Marlin. Its a tough life here in Africa. Our booze shopping list looks like Wallmarts booze order for the month while the food list looks like a homeless man's grocery list. Out of the 6 of us, 4 are accomplished "home chef's" and if the last meeting of the @ club is anything to go by we are going to have Tuna sushi, tuna steaks, Tuna fishcakes, grilled Couta and Dorado. There are also lots of kingfish (Ignoblis) and many other game fish. I will be baking corn bread on the trip.
Generally on these trips we do not target bottom fish, only game fish. The area is also a stop-over for whales and we are sometimes forced to move our fishing due to the number of whales breaching around us. While they are not aggressive, they could easily capsize a small Ski-Boat (27') and the sharks will do the rest.
Our launch is through a narrow channel called hell's gate (between Inhaca island and the mainland) where the surf really stands up. Punching waves on the way out is one thing, but coming back through the channel requires some skill with the following sea, it is like a washing machine.
If I survive the next 10 days I will be stress relieved (or annealed) and ready for the balance of what has been a stressful year. This reminds me of a South African joke, a dutchman (afrikaaner) who is vegan eats chicken and fish.
I will post some pictures on my return. Stay well and work hard.
