    Default 10 DAYS OF R& R

Tomorrow afternoon I am off for 10 days to Santa Maria (Noxianne) in Mozambique on a fishing trip with a whole bunch of buddies. we have 2 boats and the reports indicate yellow fin Tuna running wild and plenty Couta (king mackerel) Dorado, (dolphin fish) and possibly a chance to land another Marlin. Its a tough life here in Africa. Our booze shopping list looks like Wallmarts booze order for the month while the food list looks like a homeless man's grocery list. Out of the 6 of us, 4 are accomplished "home chef's" and if the last meeting of the @ club is anything to go by we are going to have Tuna sushi, tuna steaks, Tuna fishcakes, grilled Couta and Dorado. There are also lots of kingfish (Ignoblis) and many other game fish. I will be baking corn bread on the trip.

Generally on these trips we do not target bottom fish, only game fish. The area is also a stop-over for whales and we are sometimes forced to move our fishing due to the number of whales breaching around us. While they are not aggressive, they could easily capsize a small Ski-Boat (27') and the sharks will do the rest.

Our launch is through a narrow channel called hell's gate (between Inhaca island and the mainland) where the surf really stands up. Punching waves on the way out is one thing, but coming back through the channel requires some skill with the following sea, it is like a washing machine.

If I survive the next 10 days I will be stress relieved (or annealed) and ready for the balance of what has been a stressful year. This reminds me of a South African joke, a dutchman (afrikaaner) who is vegan eats chicken and fish.

I will post some pictures on my return. Stay well and work hard.

Would love to see pics. Be sure to fish the fish not let the fish fish you.

Don't die baking cornbread on a boat! I thought I saw "Hell's Mouth" somewhere on your post but it's late and I'm working on something else while in here. I never remember having to tell a Paratrooper to have fun on vacay so to reiterate, "DON'T DIE BAKING CORNBREAD ON A BOAT"!!!!

Here are the results of 10 days R&R

Great break from work, such a beautiful environment, crystal clear, ink blue waters. Pictures cannot tell the story however..

Day 1 rough seas, big swell at about 4s intervals, got knocked off my feet and broke 2 toes in the ensuing gymnastics. Like a true paratrooper I just cried and squealed like a stuck pig. Finally some Tequila on-board managed to dry my tears. I sat down and while my foot was numb, tried to set the break, never like right angled toes! Managed to get the toe more-or-less aligned and continued fishing. Needless to say no sympathy from the team. bastards!!

Day 2. launched on an outgoing tide through hell's gate. Big waves, really standing up. Had to punch through 2 of them about to break over the bow, if they had curled on us I think we may have had some impromptu swimming. The resultant airborne boat was picked up on Maputo airport radar and we needed oxygen at that altitude. The resulting crash landing in the surf broke one of the skippers ribs (serves the bastard right) and may have re-set my poor toe again. Second big wave, worst than the first, poor skipper, landed on his ass and now his back is hurting, mumbling something about C5,6 &7, whinging swine. Anyway again no sympathy from anyone and fishing continues. There were are few radio calls from Maputo tower asking unidentified aircraft to please identify + a squawk frequency instruction. Buggered if we were going to reply.

I was generally so buggered in the evenings I couldn't stay up later than 01:00 drinking, especially as we launched at 05:30 every morning. I must be getting old.

Great time, plundered fish, not on the pictures was a hook up with a Blue Marlin that came off after about 35 seconds. saw him jump twice, what a beauty. I was actually glad he got away, such a beautiful majestic fish. we would have released him anyway as we only take what we use. The fishing was so good, after the 3rd day we had all the fish we needed and the rest of the time fishing we released everything we caught.

I mentioned a couple of good cooks and they did us proud. Sushi, grilled fish, fried fish, baked fish etc. Candle-lit dinners on the deck overlooking the bay and soothing sore muscles with Rum, Whiskey, Brandy, Gin, Vodka and some great SA white wines.

I was sorry it ended but by this time I was finished!! Every muscle, joint, tendon and liver cell was complaining. So here I am, safe at home, dark tan, hobbling around with my poor toes complaining. Wish you all could have been there.

    Oh Dear!! Clean forgot.

Memorable phrase from the trip. In an officers voice over a loudhailer "Sir! Pull up your pants and step away from the Goat"!
