Hundreds Victimized by ATM Theft
(WJR) -- An ATM theft in the Detroit area has victimized hundreds of consumers.
Police say at least five men have been placing skimming devices on ATM's in Wayne, Oakland, and Livingston counties and have stolen at least 500-thousand dollars from bank accounts. Police say victims probably don't realize it.
Police say the men attach a skimming device to ATM's that captures information from bank cards. The devices are difficult to detect. The devices have a tiny camera that captures pin numbers as the customer punches them in.
The thieves withdraw money from accounts, usually between 40 and 500 dollars.
The secret service estimates that ATM skimming steals more than one-billion dollars a year.
Surveillance video has captured photos of some of the men. Authorities have not released the names of the banks or credit unions where the thefts have occurred.

Additional information indicates that the thieves are also placing additional wi-fi cameras near the ATM’s to capture the PIN numbers for accounts.
