The official name is Bat Pooitjie, which is a combination of Parabat and Pooitjiekos, food cooked in a 3 legged pot. We are similar to you in that Challenge Coins are revealed and the person without one buys the round, or he who has the highest number pays if everyone has one. We all know one another, even though we may be years apart in service as we remain close. I had breakfast with one paratrooper this morning, and had lunch with another Special Forces pal on the same day. Incidentally, the lunch-mate was Niek du Toit who was imprisoned in Equatorial Guinea for participating in Mark Thatcher,Simon Mann and others coup attempt in that country.
At this Bat Pooitjie, I gave a talk on battle experiences and signed some books, but usually people from the same year cluster together and abuse one another, compare bikes and firearms and generally have a fine time.Bat Pooitjie 2012.jpgbat pooitjie 2012 b.jpgBat pootjie 2012d.jpgBatpooitjie 2012e.jpg

Linkups. The most fun I have ever. It's interesting, it's fun, it's drunk, it's satisfying.

Our salute and best wishes to our SA Brothers (and Sisters: I didn't see any on your pictures).
BTW, what is a status/situation with females in today's SA Army Airborne?
Also, I'd like to hear from other foreign Brotherhoods on their re-unions and link ups.
Any non-American Paras are reading this?
Can you start dedicated thread?
I'll PM our German Brother Uwe.
Also, I wonder if any Kiwi wondering across jumped with "Crazy Mitch" Mitchell?
That insane MoFo (love ya' Bro!) was hanging in SoCal in early 90-s and served in mid-late 80-s in NZ.
Will try to dig him out.
Thank you, Brother for informative post.

There were never any female paratroopers when I served. The only women we had on base were the Parachute Packers and one or two civilians in secretarial slots. I understand that a single woman qualified a few years ago, but that she had not completed the PT course, which had been eased from two weeks to three days in the interim.

WINNING!!
How about organizing an APO Safari for us hunting-inclined types? just to clear up any confusion: GUNS not cameras! I have heard it said that a photographic safari is akin to kissing ones own sister. LOL!!
I have always wanted to go on Safari in Africa for as long as I can remember.

Harry,I can organise something like that from my end. Big game is very expensive ie the Big 5,(Buff $4000) but I can sometimes get cheap problem animals, the trouble with those is that you must get here at very short notice (2 days) or the authorities will get someone else to shoot it. Plains game on the other hand is pretty inexpensive about $50 per day bed and animals from $125 for Impala, through $250 Blesbuck to $600 for a Kudu. We bring own food and drink and skinners and guides are included in the day fee. There is plenty of game on the farms I shoot on and you would expect to shoot two or three animals a day if you wanted.
