Will wait for further details to emerge on this story; and they won't be from Rolling Stone either, shit I could have sworn that Drones had this guy trying to escape his captors then being recaptured by them. I still would like to see this guy freed buy our troops; then after some serious debriefing come out with the details on why he left his FOB in the first place. Being held captive as long as he has; you know there has to be some serious Stockholm Syndrome happening with him. Just saying..

So they say, anyways. I've seen plenty of derogatory reporting (official reporting) from my side of the fence on the guy just during my deployment. Stranger things have happened...

I'm reserving my judgment until further info comes out, this just seems like spin..

The full article was put out today by Rolling Stones Magazine. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics...f-war-20120607

Looks like the e-mail begins on page 4 of the article. If the article is true and accurate that was one screwed
    up unit he was in.

He's either a prisoner-of-war, or a deserter and an enemy collaborator.

Either way, we need to bring him back home and find out the truth.

Agreed, we need to get him home first, the judgment can be reserved for later.

    or all 3.

I think he thought his friend would help him get to waki-stan and then he could come home and do the talk show circuit.

My data is old, but IIRC he slipped off the FOB with the terp, and they got rolled before getting to their final destination.

He's getting an education, and his lame deployment is lasting longer then imagined.

If I had to bet ten bucks, I'd say you're exactly right. Sounds like he lived in a fantasy land, and harsh reality has intruded.

I will reserve judgement on this young man, we have a military justice system to handle that....but the bottom-line he is being held captive by enemy forces, bad guys he tried to escape from once that we know of. The only way we will find out the truth is when he is back in friendly hands..then let the chips fall where they may.

There's alot of truth to this. There are still plenty of guys with 501st over here who were on that last deployment, and they said the guy wasn't "all there." It's been pretty consistent throughout, and the stuff I've seen since his "capture" indicates he pretty much gave up his life for a new one...

I would be careful before buying into this smear job on this soldier. Who having served has not heard soldiers grumble about going AWOL because their duty sucked? A lot of that talk is just that, talk.

That should be decided when we have him here. There should be no worry in anyones mind, while captive, of what is being said about him back home, whether it is true or propaganda....that should not be an additional worry to any of our troops while in captivity. Politics makes heroes of scoundrels and scoundrels of heroes, no troop (esp in captivity) should ever have to worry about being a political martyr, no matter what. He is ours, if he's a piece of shit we'll decide and deal with him when he's home. Our guys should have an absolute belief that we will get them, despite any head game played by his captors or our politicians. We define who our shit is and what we do with it, not them.

Everything I've read, this guy brought this on himself. He's still ours, not worth setting any precedent in any future POWs mind as to how important any one individual is to us, regardless of what might be sold thru the press. If he needs fucking, we'll do the fucking here at home.

I figure it is part of the bargaining process. With negotiations underway the administration is trying to make him look less valuable to them. That way they give away less in the prisoner swap.
