Default Vietnam open 3 new sites for MIA searches

The Vietnamese government has announced it will open three previously restricted sites for excavation by the U.S. to search for troop remains from the war.
The announcement from Vietnam Minister of Defense Phung Quang Thanh comes as U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and his Vietnamese counterpart participated in a first-of-its-kind joint exchange of artifacts from the war in Hanoi.
A Department of Defense spokesman said in a statement the department believes Joint Prisoners of War, Missing in Action Accounting Command (JPAC) research teams will greatly benefit from access to the new sites in their search for the approximately 1,200 U.S. service members still missing in Vietnam.
"The Department of Defense believes these sites are critical to locating missing-in-action troops from the Vietnam War," spokesman George Little said.

I hope this brings closure to some families with Missing/Unaccounted for soldiers over there in Vietnam, when some remains are brought home and identified.

The shitty part is that, according to the article there are still 8 areas that are restricted where they will not allow searches and the experts believe they will find approx 600 of the 1,300 still MIA.

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam needs $$ - opening a few sites fuels the Vietnam War tourist industry (battlefield tours, fake artifacts, etc) and feeds the dong coffers - when they need another area demined or want more $$, they'll open some more 'restricted' areas for JPAC.

Call me jaded...just don't call me late for supper.

Tourism dollars and engineering contracts from big US companies. Got a buddy from high school who was just over there in An Khe on a proposal a few months ago, but they want the US to help pick up the tab.

But then, GA, VA, NC and SC has been doing it for 100 years to Yankees...
