Default Pakistani who helped find bin Laden going to prison

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani doctor who helped the U.S. track down Osama bin Laden was convicted of high treason Wednesday and sentenced to 33 years in prison, officials said, a verdict that is likely to further strain the country's relationship with Washington.
Shakil Afridi ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify bin Laden's presence at the compound in the town of Abbottabad where U.S. commandos killed the al-Qaida chief last May. The operation outraged Pakistani officials because they were not told about it beforehand.

In the stirring sequel to the movie, the CIC will bravely lead Seal Team 6 in a daring prison raid to free him and bring him to America, where he'll begin his new life as Chief of Medicine at the VA.

Look for it to happen around Nov. 1st.

We already knew which side of the war that Pakistan was on this is just another straw on the camels back; man I hope that someone with the balls to do it threatens to cut off all aid to that shitstain of a country before it bleeds us dry. Those fuckers may hate us but sure like our money; hmmm I hate when people play this game with us, come on Washington do the aid threat and hopefully attitudes toward us will change.

Not sure of that ... when you live in a shithole, a threat to cut off the toilet paper isn't that big of a deal.

What do you expect from a President who sucks up to our enemies and pees on our friends? I can't help but believe if we had another President with a pair, the Pakistanis wouldn't dare do this.

Not sure about that. Bush had a pair and the way it looks Pakistan was lying to him the whole time and hiding Bin Laden.

Right, because if they weren't hiding him, then how could they crack the case of this Dr. helping us yet not figure out OBL built a standout house in their military academies back yard?

Don't ignore the fact that Pakistan stopped being a "traditional" ally when Zia died. They were staunch enemies of the Soviets (and Socialism as proposed by Bhutto) along with the USA, but Zia was a double edged-sword. On one hand, he promoted capitalism and the nation was the fastest growing economy in the region. But he also returned it to a form of Islamic fundamentalism as a basis for maintaining his popularity, and gave his political blessing to the Islamic party we now have to deal with. This resulted in a wholesale rejection of Anglo-Saxon law that Pakistan had inherited from the British. Our recent strong business ties to India haven't helped them feel any nicer towards us.

Sometimes an asset refuses to come out - the reasons are many - or is compromised in the process of coming out - the reasons are many - or is sacrificed for other reasons - the reasons are many. Historical hindsight will let us know what happened here...not the MSM.

Yes and no. Pakistan is a country at war with itself, a “culture war” if you will. Zanshin is spot on with the Zia reference. The civilian government wants to play ball with USG, but there are specific factions within that same government that does not want a good working relationship with us. PAKMIL isn’t even necessarily the enemy-but Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI, the Pak equivalent to the CIA) is. The problem is ISI has infiltrated key PAKMIL positions. For instance, the current head of the military, GEN Ashfaq Kayani, is the former head of ISI and the current ISI Director-General was the former 11th Corps commander. Before that he ran the Internal Security Division of ISI.

This is important for two reasons, the first being the fact insurgent organizations such as the Haqanni Network receive a substantial amount of support from ISI. It’s not just Afghanistan they do this either. ISI has provided direct support to militant organizations in Kashmir and India as well (check out the Mumbai incident a couple years back). The reason is much more serious and deals with the government of Pakistan itself. It’s no secret Benazir Bhutto’s death was caused by a severe lapse in security, but I think the media put their gunsights on the wrong target (GEN Musharraf). Bhutto made it clear she did not trust ISI and was calling for a complete overhaul of the intelligence apparatus. Musharraf tried to do the same thing, and as soon as he attempted to install his people in the organization he experienced four separate attempts on his life . Bhutto’s assassination resulted in ISI killing two birds with one stone in the sense that it removed both threats from the equation.

Bhutto’s husband, Mr. “10%” Zadari, is considered a weak and ineffective leader but PERFECT for ISI who viewed him as “easily manageable.” That all changed after the Bin Laden raid because it shook the very foundations of ISI’s front. I’m not surprised Bin Laden was found down the street from PAKMIL’s version of West Point. The military establishment has learned that if ISI says “stay the fuck away from that house, it doesn’t exist!” well, you STAY AWAY from the house and don’t ask questions. The SEAL raid exposed this for all the world to see, but in doing so it also exposed just how weak the Pak government truly is. It’s doubtful Zadari or his advisors had a clue what ISI was doing. Since then our relations with Pakistan has soured. Of course everybody knows about the NOV 11 cross-border incident that resulted in the deaths of 24 PAKMIL personnel, but what everybody forgot was the Zadari memo that was leaked to the media just a couple of weeks prior to that incident (google “memogate” or “Zadari memo”).

The memo was drafted by Zadari and sent to the Pakistani Ambassador to the US to give to Hillary Clinton for delivery to Obama. The memo described Zadari’s concerns over the raid and how it caused significant damage to his government. He feared a coup may be coming down the pipe and he cited ISI as the source. The memo also stated he was planning on pre-empting the coup by disbanding ISI and creating a new intelligence apparatus in addition to sacking the senior PAKMIL leadership. Once the memo was leaked Zadari had to deny it and do damage control. Since then, the Pakistani Ambassador was sacked, replaced and a warrant for his arrest and trial has been issued on grounds of treason (among other things). There is also a case being built against Zadari. Things aren’t looking too good right now, but you wouldn’t know it from watching American media outlets. Check out the regional media outlets, the taste is more than a bit sobering...

His possible refusal to leave occurred to me shortly after I posted. Good call.
