Is it just me, or have we not always been taught to take the cleaning rod the direction of the bullet...

    Yep!

Rest is just a food for thought (and partial digestion).

I am an AK guy; therefore, 70-80 strokes is an unnecessary weapon masturbation.

I was taught that way, but usually don't do it. Hasn't seemed to affect my firearms any.
    Lets look at this.
Every time you clean the bore of a fiream, You insert the rod, then you pull it out. So what difference does it make which end you start with. You still insert it and pull it out. You are making the same two passes regardless. Am I missing something here?

I started using bore snakes. Just drop it in the bore, and pull it out the barrel. One direction, and the job gets done quickly.

When I do use a cleaning rod, I insert the rod from the business end, put the brush on in chamber and pull it out in the direction the round travels.

Knock the barrel against your boot, blow through it, you're good to go.
