Peoria Area loses another WWII Vet

Sgt Underwood served wth Co E, 145th IR, 37th ID. He served in the Pacific Theater including, Figi, Solomon Islands, New Georgia, & Luzon. During the retake of Manilla, 29 members of his Co were cutoff and isolated. They were under intensive mortar and small arms fire. Sgt Underwood could hear the yells for help from his comrades. So he and 3 of his close buddies took off toward the trapped comrades. Under continuous machine gun and small arms fire, they made trips back and forth to rescue the trapped men. It took them 2 1/2 hours to get all of them back. 19 wounded and 10 dead. All four of the rescuers were awarded the DSC. Sgt Underwood lived a quiet life as an Insurance salesman in a small town just a few miles North of Peoria. Very few people knew of his heroics during WWII. He died last Sun at the age of 91. He was the last of the 4 rescuers.
