Default Ramping up for the new season

As I mentioned in another thread, I joined the actual club that holds the local IDPA matches here. Wanting to get more involved, I thus attended the IDPA organizational meeting today. Wow, there's a whole lot more logistics than I had thought about - everything from getting the score sheets copied and ready, to batteries for the timers, to making sure there's air in the tires of the trailers and the "mover".

I was the only non-SO at this meeting. They did mention that they will be offering an SO class in June, but personally, I think that I don't have enough miles under my belt yet to move to that level. I still have a lot to learn. We'll see.

I then asked what time to show up to help, and they said "Well, they start setting stages at 7:30, but the "girls" that run registration don't need to get there 'til 8:30..." and then someone joked about bringing coffee and donuts.
I laughed, and said that though I was happy to help out wherever they needed me, it sounded like I was getting banished to the "girlie ghetto" of coffee and taking money, when what I really wanted to do is learn how to set up stages. Not that coffee and registration isn't an important job too. But I was hoping that learning stage set-up will ultimately help my "mental" game, and progression to be ready to try SO class. To their credit they said, well, then the answer to that is "Show up at 7:30" :-)

    Yay! Learning new things!

Good for you. As long as you have a thorough understanding of the rulebook and how to play the part of an SO you'll be ok to take the SO class. Stage design is another subject and merits it's own learning curve.

Well, it's official, I started back to IDPA last night. Went with some of my wife's co-workers and introduced them to IDPA and a shooting club they were unaware of. I had only been shooting a few times since the '08 election and ammo prices went through the roof. I think me and the wife will try and shoot much more often now.

Shot my Glock 34 which I hadn't shot in at least four years! Loved it! Almost as good as sex and I get it more often!! (j/k!!)

Well, I'm not so much interested in stage "design" (which is taken care of ahead of time by someone else in the club), but getting it from the paper into the bay - setting it up so that it can be run safely is what I'm interested in. Where do the barrels need to be for the right sight picture from cover? Is there some big rock right behind that potential point of impact? Are the angles safe for this so it won't be bouncing off into another bay? That's the kind of stuff that I want to learn.

As far as the rest of the SO stuff goes, I understand the rules, and know most of the commands, from hearing them, but I don't feel that I have enough "general" firearms experience yet. The SO's have been teachers and coaches for me, but I'm not at any place yet where I could be that for someone else. I know my Glock and how it works, but I don't have much experience with other types of handguns enough to spot a safety issue or problem-solve with "their" weapons. That's the part where I hesitate and want to wait another year or two (at least I think I do).
