Default I suck at the gym.

Hard gainer, tall and lean, crazy fast metabolism, never used a gym for weights. Been puttzing around the gym for about 3 weeks lifting, and changed diet- taking True-Mass mass gainer, protein snacks, etc. Lifting 5ish times a week. I hit muscle failure on a muscle group but am not extremely sore the next day like I usually am from normal PT...so I started lifting for maxing out instead of reps a few days ago, seems to make me more sore..

I'm stronger and faster than I've ever been, PT tests, run times, ruck times, but trying to gain mass. Prefer to work out alone, no spotter so I don't bench etc...wondering if anyone has some suggestions for me?

Don't sweat it. Focus on functional fitness, strength and endurance. I'm 44 and my metabolism is just now starting to slow down.

What you can do and how well you can do it has a lot more to do with what in your heart and head, than on your frame.

I have just now started gaining weight back and bulking up. Just keep plugging away at it.

Unless you are planing on a NFL career, I would not worry about "mass" ___some guys react quickly to gym work and weight training, some don't.Three weeks is a baby step anyway.I fought that battle for many years, trying to keep weight up for football. It ain't worth the work to gain 20 + lbs. if you are in great shape. That is unless you live on the beach and guys are kicking sand in your face

I'm not discouraged because I haven't gained weight, I'm just frustrated not knowing what I'm doing in the gym as far as routines go.

If ya wanna gain weight think like a sumo wrestler. Eat a ton of rice.

Long ago I was helping a guy do his stuff. Spotting for him and helping him load the weights. While he was doing stuff that didn't need me I'd grab something and push it or pull it. He said damn you're strong. Get some weight on and you'll be able to do more.

Well, I've been 170 since I was 17 so gaining weight was tough. I ate cup-a-soup and rice all day long and finally the weight started going up. I got to 205. Wow. Felt chubby for sure. Lost my speed and agility. Sucked for me. Came softball season and I threw my arm on the first day of warm ups. I dropped the weight thing and had to actually quit eating to finally get my weight to head south. That damn weight yo yoed for about 2 months before it finally settled back on 170.

I never again wanna get chubby.

You can alternate your routines between reps/ light weight vs. lifting for weight. I started Basic @6' and 155 lbs. At the end of Basic I was 175 lbs. When I got to AIT at Ft. Knox the weight room was where the Universal Gym sat on the floor. A good exercise is doing 10 reps of 100 lbs., 10 reps of 90 lbs., etc. see how far you get and how easy it is to lift 10 reps of 10 lbs. after all those sets.... They had an incline board that I set at 45 degrees to do sit-ups on. See how many reps of those you can do.
My weight always stayed around 175 lbs. It took me a couple of months, but I managed to bench press 220 lbs. on the Universal Gym after I started working out again at FB. It does take time to get there if you stick with it. I moved on to other activities, but I benefited greatly from working out in the gym. Once I got older my exercise changed to endurance type of activities; bicycling, skiing, and stuff like that. My workout last summer was installing a new engine and trans in my car. A T56 trans is not a light trans, especially when my car was only about 18" off the garage floor.
