I really loved our time in The Netherlands. Great history. My neighbor, this really old Dutch guy, was around 8 yrs old when the Germans occupied the region. He used to tell me stories about how they played with empty German shell casings in the streets. Truly amazing.

I went to Netherlands in 1969 when my dad was stationed at SHAPE Belgium, we passed through Nijmegen. I knew a WWII battle had been fought there but didn't know much about it at the time. I was privileged to visit Normandy twice, in 1969 and again in 1974 the day after the 40th Anniversary, right after graduation from high school and I went home to enlist. Our reception, driving in a Chevy station wagon with US Armed Forces license plates was very warm. I don't know if it's still true, but when I was over there French schoolchildren used to tend the graves of the American GIs buried in the cemeteries in their towns. Since serving in the Division I have always wanted to return and take my family.

Back when I was in the Division they used to have the old World War II troopers pass by us so we could salute them. It was always humbling to me to wear the same wings and patch they did so much to make an honor to wear. Thanks for sharing this video, Purple - again a humbling reminder of what an honor it was to wear the red, white and blue patch and carry the baton for those guys.

When I was on convalescent leave while with the 1st Armored Div in '89, I got the chance to fly my Dad over and take him on a mini tour of some of the WWII battlefields and cemeteries and such. My Dad was in the Coast Guard during WWII doing Atlantic convoy duty on a Destroyer Escort. Anyhow, I took him around to several places in Germany, Holland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg; went up to Hitler's retreat at Bertchesgaden and of course had to stop by the Disney castle and even took him on a swing by the east/west border where my GDP position was during my first tour in Germany. On the other side of the country, took him to Malmedy, St. Vith and of course, Bastogne and the American cemetery across the border in Luxembourg where Gen Patton is buried. We met a couple of 101st paratroopers doing the tour with their families; he remained pen pals with them up until they all passed on . He really enjoyed the tour, having a chance to see some of the places he had helped deliver men and materiel to during the war and I think now how blessed I was to be able to do that for him. Sorry, get kinda maudlin thinking about things like that as I know we all do.

I'd think our site Admins should be trying their best to hook us up with an official APO European Sizzler...

I wish that I'd gone to more WWII battle sites while I was in Europe. I haven't watched the video but I'm sure it's great. I ALSO wish that there was more out about the Korean War. I'm here and even though there's a lot of stuff going on over here it doesn't get the rep that WWII does. ANYWHO, thanks Purp !
