Default Not sure what to think in this one.

    http://www.wane.com/dpp/traffic/inci...les-on-Lima-Rd

Quick summary, guy wrecks and is allegedly intoxicated. Medic is seen hitting him a couple times while in the vehicle and then after they jump to where he is on the cot on a back board, the officers taze him while he is restrained.

I am not commenting on what the officers did because I am wondering what your agencies would say about this. I will comment on the EMT hitting him while the Paramedic stands back and watches. They guy is combative and spitting, so what. We have a job to do and physically assaulting a patient is not one of them. There could be a bad head injury being masked by the alcohol. Put an O2 mask on and let him spit till his heart is content. Sedate him, if there is a spinal injury he is a harm to himself when he fights. I am horrified by the actions of the crew and it pisses me off. Our job is to treat them medically not assault them and I hope they burn for it.

What are the LEO thoughts on the restrained person being tazed. What are your thoughts on the "get back or your next comment"? To me that sounds like an officer wanting another fight on scene.

Please no derogatory posts on officers if your not LE. I am not posting this for people to start bashing officers about abuse of power I am looking for legit LEO opinions and reactions not bashing...

If he's restrained and just spitting and being a douche, then I see no need in tazing him. At a bare minimum put a mask on him and laugh while he drools on himself.

Kind of ridiculous if you think about it. Now...as has happened before...if the douche was unrestrained and fighting medics. He's fair game and gonna tote an ass whooping.

I agree with IED. Having BTDT we used a lot of masks. Although I have seen some LEOs who didn't carry them.

I used to carry a baby shirt to put over a spitter's head. Probably can't do that anymore.

I look at it in the same way I do at work (I work with violent teenagers, most of whom are sexual offenders). He might have needed his butt kicked, but it's not our place to do it. Unprofessional.

I'm and EMT-B and LEO and can tell you a non-rebreather has saved me many times from spitters after we boarded them. During those times, I oviously wasn't working in my LEO capacity so let the deputies do their job (applying only the necessary force to effect an arrest) prior to treatment/transport.

While conducting LEO duties, I similarly applied only the minimum necessary force to effect the arrest and then began treatment until the EMS crew arrived to continue care.

In public service, we need to remember to not take things personal. The EMT is toast and the officers are in trouble since this is in the court of public opinion and we all know how fucked up that can be. Shoulda gave him some O2 and rapid transport with additional LEO link up at ER.

I know it's hard to do. BUT!! A professional must be a professional at all times. Dropping down to anger or "get back" makes you one of them. The EMT dude was wrong as it can be. The cops also. Kicking em when they're down ain't cool and it isn't professional.

I hate second guessing another medic, I wasn't looking at that patient, but, just from the video he seems to be able to focus his attention and that alone makes me not so concerned about a head injury, I would give him the option of being cooperative with me or dealing with the PoPo. If he elects to deal with the PoPo they will persuade him one way or another to settle down. That failing I might dart him with something to settle him down and give it a minute to work. There is very little I can do for him while he is fighting. Then we can treat him. He could be a danger to me in his current state of mind and If I try to force him into a spinal precautions, c=collar, board, etc. I put myself in a legal limbo. Besides, forcing an injured patient may do more harm than good, increase ICP that sort of thing. I may be wrong but so far I haven't seen anyone who had a closed head injury or was getting shocky from blood loss be able to focus intently on anything for very long. Hitting your patient is just wrong, that was an attempt to reason with the patient, just as the taser was, which I also think was wrong. I think that if the medic had thought that the patient couldn't help himself he wouldn't have lost his professional bearing so fast. It appears at the end that the officer was keeping the EMT that hit the patient away from the patient so I wonder what else has transpired. I would have handled it completely differently.
As I guess Doc would have. I'm gonna show this video at our staff meeting this month and see what the medics I work with have to say.

What would happen if the staff at a mental ward did that same shit to a strapped down patient? They would all be fired and charged with a crime. They should all be fired at the minimum.

One of the cops is seen pointing at a person off camera telling them "if you don't get back, you are next". Amazing shit.

Unprofessional as fuck and way over the line.

Now before anyone calls me a cop hater and paramedic hater, just know that the DUI guy should also be charged with assault for the spitting. Or whatever charge goes with it.
