    Default SecDef announces budget cuts...

The Pentagon plans to expand its global network of drones and special-operations bases in a fundamental realignment meant to project US power even as it cuts back conventional forces. Looks like the Navy's already experiencing the effects...

Who are our biggest threats, threats where armed engagement may take place?

Korea, Koreans will take over soon with the US playing a supporting role (Good IMHO).
Iran, putting a large land force into Iran would not be good, I'd rather let the Navy (with some AF) both their infrastructure and military into oblivion. The surviving citizens can then shoot the remaining mullahs.
Terrorists-Light/SOF forces that can move rapidly.
FWIW-This is the force structure Rummy was happy with, a Democrat controlled Congress forced him to expand the Army and Marines. So while the Republicans will whine, they will not stop the cuts, even if they win the Whitehouse, Senate, and maintain control in the house.

Lets be honest, we knew this was coming. With a Democrat in office and the defense budget being the easiest, and least politically risky thing to cut it was obvious what the CNC was going to direct. Frankly, part of me is looking forward to the thinning of the ranks of some of the sub-par performers we've been forced to hold on to because we lacked the paperwork to kick them out before. Hopefully it will also equate to officer promotions going back to the level of scrutiny they had 10 years ago, back when it MEANT something to make Captain or Major. Same for NCOs, I haven't attended or heard of an NCO induction ceremony in years! I can't believe we've gotten away from that.

So, while I disagree with the politics behind it, I'm actually looking forward to some of the cut backs. I just wish it didn't also mean less equipment for training, repair parts would become more sparse, or that ranges and ammo would get harder to plan and resource as well.

I hate to piss on your parade Sir but I remember the draw down after Veitnam
I was a dependant and listened more than talk. Who do you think will be cut? the folks that lead or the politicians wearing uniforms. I no longer have faith in the process. Cover our a$$ and let the junior officers fry. If you think leadership in combat is bad now at Captian and above wait till this shit. They will be asking for clearance 3 ranks higher to take a dump.
Hey no worries these fuckers here on welfare still get the free housing drugs and foods stamps. Oh yea and fucking SSI. And fail to pay taxes and the fucking earned income exemption.
    Hey its the man's fault.
    This shit pisses me off.

I hope I am wrong sir I really do. You are there so I will trust that you watch you 6

This basically the same type of thing that happened under Clinton in the 90's. I remember people being offered early outs and the big draw down.

We seem to do this every 20 years or so. The BIG "What If"... is have we guessed the possible future threats correctly that we are building our future force around? History tells us we fight wars with the military we have not necessarily the military we need. For the sake of the nation..I hope they chose correctly when making these cuts !

This will work until history bites us in the ass again. It's always downsize after a war because we won't fight anymore ground wars (too bad the enemy doesn't comply with whatever the latest defense strategy is). WWII wasn't going to happen because WWI was the war to end all wars. Korea wasn't going to happen because no one was going to fight after WWII. Vietnam was just going to be advisors. Rummy wanted a small, agile, technology DOD since there was not going to be anymore ground wars. Al Queda forgot to read the Quadrenial Defense review and we ended up in a ground war. I am glad SOF has grown and their capabilities are unbelievable. I hope Iran, North Korea, and China will work with our "new" strategy of rescuing hostages and finding and smoking individual terrorists.

    But history says otherwise.

Me personally I've had it with all the new stuff.

    Units of Action=Pentomic Divisions
PRT and "New" PT Test= Physical Fitness FM 21-20 from 1969
Panetta= The Army in 1990's I remember it sucking having to buy my Joe's toilet paper in the barracks so we could spend money on Land Warrior. Luckily Land Warrior is now dead but after 10 years of wasted money.
Democrats and Republicans= Jackasses who can't get shit done

You can't funnel defense money to your friends and retired officers when you're spending it all on salary and food for grunts. The math is quite simple really.

All I can say is; I hope you're wrong. My father still talks about getting caught in the draw-down after he got back from 'nam, and of course the examples of poor leadership and corruption at the highest levels.

As you say, I am still in the mix, so I don't have a choice but to try and see the silver lining in all this.
