lol No literally I don't want to get all fucked up trying to over train so should I actually use rocks because I live in the woods I can find those things. All these other tips are awesome btw thank you. All the other parts of my work out are going awesome this is just one that I really want to get underway because I figure I'll ruck through the 80 some acres around my house to various shooting locations I've used on friends' property in the past and practice shooting for some of the 5 min breaks my friend told me to take while rucking. Is that a good idea too btw taking those little breaks?

This is good to know VoTrooper99, as I'd rucked with 50lb in a large ALICE pack/frame and always wondered how it stacked up against the Molle. I know the cross struts on the ALICE pack usually dug into my back after a while (especially going uphill or anytime I had to lean forward) Another issue I had was the shoulder strap padding being too short, and the absence of a chest strap, which I always felt would take some pressure off the shoulders. Does the MOLLE pack/frame address any of these things specifically or is it just more comfortable in general with better frame design?

    Two issues to respond to.

    1. Yes you can use rocks. Weight is weight. If you're doing a long distance you will want to take a short break to rest/ powder feet and change socks.

    2. I find the MOLLE straps are better padded and the weight sits more on your hips than your shoulders. The ruck is flatter and taller rather than sticking out like a giant back zit like the ALICE did.

You should get a copy of "Get Selected" and read it.

As far as rucking goes, it is more than just conditioning and IMO best to practice with the type of rucksack you'll actually be using at some point - also, it's not just about the ruck, you'll always be carrying additional weight, too, so plan and practice for it (wpn, ammo, other gear, etc) - know any USAR/NG types around your area who might loan you some gear - if they are Infantry types, they might want to go "strolling" along with you, too...misery loves company and it helps pass the time.

Re: large ALICE - a piece of trivia some might find of interest - it was developed for one purpose - to allow us to jump and backpack the M2667 w/SADM ("Atomic Hand Grenade").

    Good luck.

Or inflict so much that we charge head long into machine gun fire in an attempt to keep from ever putting the thing back on again.

Kind of like the T10 harness was designed to make you want to get the he'll out of the bird so you could get out of it.

I thought it was designed to carry everyones shit. Ammo, commo, extra this, extra that. I'd finally find my last dry tshirt back at the barracks.

Rucks are pretty much like closets - the more space you have, the more stuff you find to fill it with. The Army came out with the small and medium ALICE for general use, and then the large ALICE which was developed around the dimensions/specs for the M2667 and its weighty fill materials. Once it was in the supply system, it became the ruck du jour in the typical one size fits all mentality. Personally, I had gotten used to my old jungle ruck and liked it better than the ALICE - more versatile.

Here's a recent article for Ginger to ponder as he practices his rucking skills -
