Troops, I apologize for not responding - I haven't checked this thread in quite a while since deciding we'd not be attending the Sizzler.

Things are okay for now. However, at the end of this year, the wife's company (a major French pharmaceutical company) is cutting back operations in her plant to a skeleton crew for only a limited period as they fulfill a contract to produce components for another company's product. (They were going to shutter it altogether, but legal repercussions made them reconsider and keep it open another year.) Recently, the wife was told her end date was Dec 31st, rather than be kept on the remaining team as she expected. (This isn't necessarily a bad thing: those who stay on may experience dramatically reduced salaries and benefits, the plant can be sold (it's being shopped) and any new owners have no obligation to provide anything beyond minimum severance packages, if that.)

For employees being cut now, there is a very good severance benefits package, but it does end a run of 25 years of continuous employment by this firm for her, and at age 61 in a horrific economy, the future is -- shall we say -- not so bright as to require shades. As I am "self-employed," this puts an obvious crimp in income and worse, health insurance benefits. There will be a period (already begun) for us of cutting back on the various frivolous lifestyle ammenities until we go on Social Security and drain the available resources of you young fuckers.

Unfortunately, dropping the high cost of driving my gas-guzzling Deerslayer pickup to NC in August to party down isn't the best way to prepare for a belt-tightened future. We were both sincerely planning on it and wanting to meet you guys (her, perhaps a little too much, I think, after Ca-CAWWW stories were slurred out by Shadow on a late night liquid and rambling telephone call).

I will be with you in spirit. (She, on the other hand, better keep her distance.)

Sorry to hear of the news brother.

I was looking forward to our meeting and shaking
hands. You have to handle your bidness...geterdone.

Hopefully you can make the next one.

Brothers, I don't want you to feel like I'm sob-storying you. Things are not bad here at all. The wife's bennies include retraining money thanks to the Trade Act because the product line they produced was shipped overseas, a half-day schedule to facilitate getting her future employment act together starting in late October, and a months pay for every year she was employed there, plus a matching period of health-care coverage. In fact, she'll be being paid to sit at home for almost 2 years, and during that time she can draw unemployment (a first for her life). We're already looking at training options that may let her work on projects with me, and potentially selling her the company so we can get the whole "woman owned business" breaks that exist out there.

We've just done little shit like quit going to restaurants 8 times a week cuz we don't feel like cooking, cancelled the bullshit Premium channels on cable that never have anything we want to watch, and are putting that money towards a better planned future so we can ride around the country in the mini-landyacht. Heck, my biggest peeve is that I had to shelve my plans for recording the activities and "fellowship" of the Sizzler and creating a touching and heartfelt documentary about how both current and former paratroopers hang together and maintain that mystic and mythical connection that only they know...

...and then enter it into film festivals, and win buttloads of money making elitist limousine liberals cry over the lifelong bond of the noble Brothers of the Silk who volunteer to stand between them and the screaming hordes of evil-doers bent on the rape and pillage of America. Party down with Hollywood celebrities and wannabe actresses desperate to thrill to the inner conquest of such men... yeah, I had plans for life to get good and kinky on this, but there's always next year.

Oh yeah, and I wanted to meet you guys, too, and tell you some fat stories about my many mishaps and illspent youth in the 'Deuce.
