    Default 9 month deployment.....for some

    http://www.armytimes.com/news/2011/0...ments-080511w/

It is official: Nine-month deployments begin January, and the change will be fully implemented by April. The new policy does not affect soldiers who deploy prior to year’s end.

The new rules, announced Friday by Secretary of the Army John McHugh, apply to units at the division-level and below. Corps-level deployments will stay at 12 months “due to their oversight for the entire operation,” though the goal is to get them to nine months, said Army spokesman Lt. Col. Craig Ratcliff.

Well when the kid goes....a few less gray hairs because of the shorter tour! He's chomping at the bit, realizes he needs the CP and CIB to be successful career-wise.

Yes the tours are shorter but does that also reduce time between rotations? Will the net effect for the average grunt actually mean more line time during a three year enlistment? (e.g. 2 x 9 months instead of 1 x 12)

I have the privilege of working with a squad of paratroopers from 1/505th. Their tour, they were just informed, has been cut from 12 to 9 months. They also will not be receiving an R&R break just like it says in the article. Most of these guys are still kids and are on at least deployment number 2.

To be honest I would rather do 12 and get a break in between than doing 9 straight months.

Do you really believe that shit? I have heard that so many times that I can't count. How can Department of Army cut troop levels and at the same time reduce deployment time and extend time between deployments? Do the math 2and 3 do not make 4. I have subscribed to the Army Times for 30 years and have read it over and over. Good Luck. AIRBORNE! GERONIMO!!

I went 7 months before getting RnR so doing another 2 months then going home for good doesn't sound too bad to me.

Why tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at deaths door?

Two years ago I was at a conference with Gen. Casey. During his speech he stated that his number 1 priority goal before leaving was to get the deployment cycle "fixed" to a 9/27 rotation, that of course being 9 on 27 off. He was trying to get everything set up to make that a reality. I guess we will see.

9 in 18 home will be better then 12 in 12 home.
    Good for the Soldiers.
However, I have to point out that a series of CSA's have berated the other services for not having a 12 month rotation policy; going as far as to say tours less then 12 months long were not productive.
Good thing we have a new CSA who won't have to explain shorter tours vs Combat Effectiveness.

I heard our tour is changing to 9 months, too (Guard.) Least of my worries but how does leae work, then? Active troops get to take extra leave after de-mob? That would be great and well deserved. Reservists probably get their acrued leave bought out, I am guessing?
