    Community Rules

I have a hard copy of the old AP.org Community Rules that I printed out the day I first joined The Paratrooper Association.

I would be glad to scan or transcribe and post them here as either a historical reference or as a cornerstone for new and improved rules.

Or I can shred them and we can have no rules at all.

Discuss amongst yourselves and let me know.

I see some good things about posting rules. Posting rules makes rule makers and rule followers feel better, which is nice and feels fair - no one can accidentally offend out of ignorance. Mostly, I think having posted rules and enforcing them puts in place a standard by which rule breakers can learn that they are out of line with the community. Some will take that information and make it useful to their thinking; others will not, depending on their attitudes.

I tend to think that people come with their own internal rules into any situation and follow those, no matter what is posted as rules for a place. Information of a useful nature is heeded by those who want to be a part of the group or whatever, but even the best advice is disregarded when a persons internal feelings and attitudes overrule it.

After the war, someone asked him why he stood alone against an entire German company. Audie Murphy replied:

    They were killing my friends.

We don't need rules if we all promise not to get our feelings hurt, after all it's just the internet.

We don need no stinking Rules.
If things get out of hand, post a rule or two. If not needed don't.

It's the internet. If you can't be a dick here....
So the maples formed a union
    And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
    By hatchet,
    Axe,
    And saw
