    Default D-Day Rememberance

67 years ago today, our spiritual forefathers were completing their preparations to assault Normandy. These paratroopers would be the first wave, landing the night before the beach assaults to secure vital roads and bridges, and to ensure the allied forces weren't pushed off the beaches and back into the ocean. Thousands jumped, and many still rest in Normandy today.

We are what we are today, because of what these paratroopers were almost seven decades ago. They were great, and we walk in their shadow.

I had the good fortune to participate in the 45th Anniversary Celebration. Below are some pictures.

Today, we remember the sacrifices made by these paratroopers and their families.

    We remember.

Tonight on both the Military Channel and History International are some good D-Day programs. DVR'ing the HC-I show about the 502 PIR of the 101st and their D-Day missions. A few days ago I watched about the "forgotten" 507 PIR who were attached to the 82d for D-Day(sub-ing for the 504 still fighting in Italy)and then jumping in Operation Varsity with the 17th Abn.Division in 1945. Good stuff the 507 special and look forward to the one about the 502 tonight. THANKS AGAIN TO THE GREATEST GENERATION ESPECIALLY THOSE PARATROOPERS AND GLIDERMEN !

Its amazing how so many people have forgotten about this day completely (I don't mean you Hendo, just the pukes that don't care).

Thank you, most of all, to the men that didn't come back, and to the men that gave so much on that day. Thank you to Ambrose and Spielberg for giving us such vivid images (which I'm know pale in comparison to what the reality of that day was) with which we can teach our sons and daughters about the sacrifices made on that day so that the world could be a better place.

To the Airborne, and the rest of the Allied effort, you have my utmost respect. I hope you live/lived quiet fulfilling lives, and may you rest in peace.

Thank you for the videos, and for this whole thread. I stand in awe and appreciation, again.

Since we didn't hear a peep out of Obama and had to endure a long diatribe from a "weiner" yesterday - a step back in time to how a TRULY great statesman honored D-Day - this moved me to tears, especially as he mentioned our cemeteries in France/Europe.

Met an old 101st trooper in '97 when I was stationed in Denver....he asked me how many jumps I had, I told him and then he said he only had 10. Number 8 was into Normandy.....number 9 was during Operation Market Garden. I was extremely humbled.

My 7 year old grandson helped me hang our 101st Airborne Division flag in our driveway 6/6/20011- For all those brave guys from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. The ones that lead the way.
