MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) -
Moncks Corner police say a man shot and killed one of two burglars who broke into his home and tried to steal his guns Wednesday morning.
According to police, the home invasion and shooting occurred around 9 a.m. on Cooper River Boulevard.
Moncks Corner Police say a 50-year-old man came out of his bedroom and heard voices upstairs. A police report states that the man became afraid of his safety, armed himself and went to the back of the house.
The man says he was then approached by a masked man dressed in all black who was carrying a long gun and a black nylon bag. A police repot states that the homeowner, in fear for his life, fired toward the suspect. The man said he then heard more rustling upstairs and left the home.
A neighbor then spotted another man leave the home in the direction of Stoney Landing Road. When officers checked the house for other suspects, they found the first suspect dead from a gunshot wound with a long gun and nylon bag by his side.
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office canine unit was able to locate the second suspect who was taken to a local emergency room and detained.
Authorities have not released the suspects identities yet, describing both as 20-year-old black men.
The Moncks Corner Police Department are continuing the investigation. Investigators say they are trying to determine if the burglary was a random act or targeted for a specific reason.
