COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A U.S. Army officer who pleaded guilty to taking bribes in exchange for awarding contracts to foreign companies has been sentenced to five years in prison.
U.S. District Judge Christine M. Arguello handed down the sentence for 45-year-old Maj. Roderick Sanchez on Wednesday in Denver.
Prosecutors sought a minimum of seven years in prison for Sanchez, who served in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. Sanchez's attorneys, however, asked Arguello to take the major's military service into consideration, in deciding his sentence.
Sanchez must also give up two Rolex watches, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a pickup truck, real estate in Fremont County and other property. He was fined $15,000 and will be supervised for 3 years after his release.
Court documents haven't revealed the nature or value of the contracts. The foreign nationals are identified as Person A and Person B. Their companies aren't named.
