Speaking of IL-76M and Soviet/East Block parachutning.
Here is a final scene from the most "parawood" Soviet movie "Inside the Zone of the Special Interest" ("В Зоне Особого Внимания").

Airborne's enlistment jumped up by several hundred percent for years to come. Naive, but "flashy" movie, still one of the Airborne's favorites.
Funny, Paratroopers in the movie wore awesome (US-style) BDUs, which eventually became a prototype of the new style (mid-80s).

Great soundtrack. I like the end with the view from the ramp and the drogue chutes.

Hey Ranger now your in my area
The shithook or chinook are CH-47C-D C models being used mostly during 70 to early 80s The D models were just retrofits more power.
The 2nd is the CH-54A-B Could be used for Parachute operations with what we used to call the Box Car or attachable people pod.
one last thing the 54 with the people pod could be ejected in flight ouch!!! and it also holds the Helicopter Altitude Record. Have a good one Mike G.

And while I never jumped from it, the helicopter that carries the people pod is the CH-54 Tarhe.
It is better known as the Skycrane:

It can't be seen in this pic, the whole backside is open.... the Pod is a 5-sided box.

I've jumped a CH-54 and if I'm not mistaken the People Pod was different than the one in the photo.

I don't remember windows and there were other differences.

For the Jump Master, there are two large hand grips about eye level, one on the inside and one outside, both rear port side and outside steps underneath.

When the JM is checking the DZ, he grabs both grips and puts his left foot on the outside step.

The really daring ones will swing all the way around, out of view of the jumpers and stand/hang there a bit.

Loosing sight of the JM is typically disconcerting to newbie jumpers.

I jumped out of that plane that looks like a C 130 but it's only got 2 engines? Hell, I don't know. It's been 30 years.

    Bell,
    Must be C-123?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairchild_C-123_Provider

It's interesting to trace the time-shifted parallels between the former rivals (USA & USSR).
Traditionally, Soviet "responses" were larger in size and modified to local needs and conditions.

    DC-3 - Li-2 (at least, licensed).
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisunov_Li-2
    C-123 - An-8
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-8
    C-130 - An-12
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An-12
    (next sizing up- An-22)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An-22
    C-141 - IL-76M
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il-76
    Tnen things shifted in sequence
    An-124 - C-5
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An-124
An-224 - C-17 (only without D0D-size budget and C-17 comparable production level, primarily due to USSR fallout)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-225

Imagine if rivals could co-op on resources and development...
But, then it would take all fun out of the race (and with our late Government's strategies to outsource US jobs), Globemasters were to be biuld in ...Siberia, and M-16 would be AK-ugly, but equivalently reliable and less mid-range accurate.
    Ne-eh.
I'll keep my .45 Kimber, and let them have their Makarov...

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

In my last post I forgot to mention Aircraft that I Jumped out of which are
    C-7a Caribeu (Cann't remember spelling)
    C-123
    C-130
    C-141
    UH-1H
    CH-47
I think that there were at least 2 possibilities for Bell the big difference to me would be the C-123 if you ever have jumped this Airplane you remember it it was very loud vibrated constantly and you were glad to leave. The C-7A however was much smother a little better and smaller than a 130. Usually these aircaft were reserved for Special Ops however I got lucky being in the Air Cav. To get a jump on 1. I think the Crew was just trying to stay Qualified. As for the 54 Tahre picture I believe that is the Hospital Pod The people pod for jumping was smaller. I believe Ft. Eustis Might have one in there museum although I haven't checked that where the Mechanic School was. Mike G.

    My turn:

    C130 - my favorite
    C141 - hated these jumps
C5A - liked the ride; didn't care for the jump
    Huey - second favorite
