Default The SEALs I have met

The post on the SEAL poser made me think of the SEALs that I have met. Working construction in the Tidewater area of Virginia for thirty years I have met a dozen or more SEALs. This area is home to the even # SEAL teams and the boat crews. A SEAL bought the house next door to me. I helped him and his wife remodel the inside of the house.
We did ever thing that good neighbors do.

The one sure thing that I know is- that I know nothing about the military side of the SEALs that I have met. I have never had a SEAL say he was in the military, let alone he was a SEAL. I always found out by ,either the person introducing me, when working on a job ,or Trident pin on his uniform. In the case of my neighbor it was by my wife thru his wife.
When ever I tried to get some insight to what he does and thinks about the military , it was always a one sided conversation that left me wondering what he was thinking.

I can tell you about the character of the SEALs that I have met. They all seem to have the same traits. They don’t look or talk like there in the military. They don’t act like there bad-asses. They make the best neighbors even when you don’t know where they go every day.

To sum it up the SEALs that I have met have always left me
thinking , What a great guy that was, but I don't think I would mess with him.

We did beach reconnaissance training down in the Gulf of Mexico. A SEAL team detachment trained my LRS platoon for a few days. They were all pretty squared away. They smoked our bags on abdominal PT throughout the day. That sucked a little. None of them were reluctant to talk about being a SEAL or shit they did in the past - but neither were we. It was a good time.

The SEALs in airborne school were a bunch of loudmouths. And one I was partnered up with on the sled (two students drag one student on a sled while he practices popping a riser) was a whiny bitch.

People are people. Some are outstanding. Some are shit bags.

The SEALs you see in jumps school have only graduated from BUDS. They have to go thru airborne school and then about 16 weeks SQT before they become SEALs. Fresh out of BUDS they probally think they are super man.

yea I agree, I have never met anyone that was in training to become a SEAL but I'm sure there pumped up.

It just pisses me off that posers can pass themselves off as Special Forces when you consider the training you have to go thru to get into any SOF unit.

First SEALs I ever met were at Kirtland AFB, NM. There were 12 of us, TDY enroute to Korea for a month (We were lab rats, but that is another story)

Anyhow, we were staying at the VEQ, and thought our shit didn't stink. We were by GOD, brand spanking new Infantrymen.

Now the first clue we had were the guys at the chow hall in the morning with their long ass hippie haircuts, jack shit on their uniforms, black hoodies sticking out their necks, and wearing BROWN Hermann Survivors.

We were like WTF? Who are these douchebags???

Fast forward a week or so and we realize that the hippie boys were down the hall from us in the VEQ.

    We shunned the long hairs.

Then one night, most of us had liquored ourselves up when two of the guys brought some Albuquerque girls back to the VEQ.

    Then it was game on.

"Hey girls why don't you come down here with the real men"

"Who the fuck are you guys?"

    "We're the NAVY BAND"

    "Yeah, he plays TROMBONE"

"Fuck you, you gay ass Navy fags..."

"And who the fuck are you you little kids?"

"WE ARE GAWDAMNED US ARMY INFANTRYMEN!"

(this was about when I stuck my head head out into the hallway)

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU FUCKING FUCKS TALKING ABOUT? SHUT THE FUCK UP" (My mastery of the English Language had suffered from 16 weeks at Fort Beggining)

Anyhow, that was about when the first punch landed.

Next thing I know, 12 Grunts and about 8 SEALs are throwing down in the Hallway. Broken bottles, dry wall, doors torn off hinges.

Blood on the mystery carpet which seemed to show no stain.

No one really got the upper hand, and the girls had run away after about 10 minutes.

That's when the Air Farce SP's showed up, billy clubs in hand.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!!!???"

Fortunately, the SEALs were smarter than we were...

    "Training"

    "Training???"

"Roger, we were conducting an Ad Hoc Hand to Hand Combat Training session."

"Well knock it off, we got 5 different complaints in the last 5 minutes..."

"Wilco. We were about finished anyhow"

SO the SP's left and we all broke out into hysterics.

Turns out the SEALs were a bunch of good guys, and we had earned their respect.

We Drank some more, they showed us their guns (First time I had seen an Echo model short barrel M-60)

WHICH THEY KEPT IN THEIR ROOMS!!!!!!!

(Which convinced us that they walked on water, and could turn water into wine)

Any how, we hung out a bit for the next couple of weeks.

Did some "PT BOWLING" (10 pushups for every pin you leftstanding) at the Kirtland AFB Bowling Alley. You should have seen the Air Force Weenies staring....

Anyhow, that's my first SEAL story...

I met a few in Ranger School and MFF, some were cool and others were dicks. I met some real professional ones down range, but every SOF organization has their 10 percent to include Special Forces.

Only one I know for sure was a Seal I met turned out to be my best friend. I found out what he had done while active duty from his brother. Over the years we talked some and drank a lot. I had help place his ashes in the Goldstream Creek just north of Fairbanks a few years back. He wanted the last laugh on the greenies. Jim was a damn good man that really never made it home from Nam. Rest in Peace Brother I sure miss you.

I heard the Navy Band thing before from a guy later purported to be a Seal.

    That's funny.

Point well made. They never said we are SEALs they said we are the Navy Band When in a tight situation I have never said, "I'm a paratrooper don't mess with me". Afterwards maybe.

Most privates think they are ten feet tall and bulletproof after completing their training as well.

A couple months (or days/weeks) in the line and that tends to temper.
