Default AF looking for a new small cargo aircraft

On the same day that it issued the Light Attack/Armed Reconnaissance aircraft capability query (see above), Aeronautical Systems Center in Ohio issued another seeking information on a fixed-wing Light Mobility Aircraft (LiMA) that USAF also would like to field starting in Fiscal 2011. The service wants approximately 60 LiMAs and would expect to achieve initial operational capability in Fiscal 2012. The proposed aircraft would have to accommodate at least six passengers plus aircrew, be able to operate on unimproved austere landing sites—with no ground support other than fuel—carrying a minimum of 1,800 pounds of passengers and cargo. It's cargo door should allow for loading and unloading of patients litters or a 36-inch warehouse skid. The LiMA candidate would have dual pilot stations, but be certified for single pilot operation.

This will be interesting, the U-28 would seem to fit the bill, as would the Cessna Caravan, plus a host of other aircraft. Again, anyone familiar with AFSOF history would have to see the similarity between now and the war in SE Asia, too bad "Jimmy" and the demorats gutted the military after Viet Nam.

I hope they look at the Gippsland GA8 Airvan. Lower cost of maintenance, and the Air Force already owns a hundred or so in the Civil Air Patrol. I suspect however that the requisition was specifically written with the Caravan in mind.

    General characteristics

    • Crew: 1
    • Capacity: 7 passengers or freight
    • Length: 29 ft 4 in (8.9 m)
    • Wingspan: 40 ft 9 in (12.4 m)
    • Height: 12 ft 9 in (3.9 m)
    • Wing area: 214 ft² (19.85 m²)
    • Empty weight: 2200 lb (997 kg)
    • Gross weight: 4000 lb (1814 kg)
    • Powerplant: 1 × Lycoming I0-540-K1A5 horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine, 310 hp (231 kW)

    Performance

    • Maximum speed: 214 mph (343 km/h)
    • Cruise speed: 136 mph (217 km/h)
    • Range: 930 miles (1722 km)
    • Rate of climb: 787 ft/min (4 m/s)

Maybe they can bring the Osprey back to life. It's expensive.

We have been flying the GA8 for several years now and although she is an ugly bitch its a fantastic bird. Most of our GA8's are configured for advanced technological ariel surveillence but we have been doing some remote field demonstrations lately in our USAF graded OPEX's. I guess this explains why the unusual taskings.

Trust me, you look like Munchkin compared to some of our CAP pilots.
