“A citizen who shirks his duty to contribute to the security of his community is little better than the criminal who threatens it.” - Robert Boatman
"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value."

Current issue of Army Times(27 July) reccomends Aimpoint Micro T1. Weighs only 3 oz. Cost is $650.00. Need to save your money.
Then keep saving and get the coolest scope for a .223/5.56...

Punks jump up to get beat down...
I am saving my money for the March Tactical scope that is made in the finest optic house in Japan called "Deon" Co. They make the finest benchrest rifle telescopes in the world for benchrest shooters who shoot from 100 to 1000 yards.
The last 1000 yard champion used a March. You are not considered competitive unless you use a March. That's the rumor mill anyway so don't jump my ass because you think your special scope is the shit. By you I mean anyone.
The one I am interested in is the 2.5-25 X 42 Tactical Scope. It is a ten power zoom. The highest in the world for rifle telescopes. They also have a 10-60 X 52 BR for benchrest shooters.
Here are the specs: http://www.deon.co.jp/kelbly-page/
Kelbly's is a well known supplier to benchrest shooters. Supposedly, David Tubb is helping the Navy with special requirements for a sniper scope and will be a liaison between the Japanese and the Navy.

Check the Burris FastFire II as well.
Got mildot?
Lordy, 3 grand. Wow.

There is no way I could afford optics like that either! My speed is more along the lines of a Burris XTR 3-12.

$750-800.

What did the pros like Skip Talbot (sp?) and the other world record holders use?
That would be what I was looking to get.

Update on rifle telescopes. I have been looking at (and drooling) for a nice compromise on price per value. I have found the Sightron III 30mm 6-24 X 50 mm telescope to be very attractive for $750 (street price) if you can find them.
It has been said, on a number of optics and other shooting related sites, that the optics are on a par if not superior to the Burris XTR series (definitely) and most probably to the Leupolds and NightForce scopes! Koshkin at Opticstalk supposedly says that the Sightron III is the best optics coming out of Japan.
What is of equal importance in a scope is the ability to track (audible and tactile mechanical clicks) the full range of adjustments for windage and elevation and the absolute accuracy and repeatability of said adjustments and return to zero every time. The new Sightron III 6 24X50 scopes have 100 minutes of angle for elevation and so enough for shooting to ranges of 1000-1200 yards and you can always get a 20 MOA scope base just to be sure.
For the price range, they are definitely attractive to the man who wants to build "the poor man's sniper rifle" that will also bring in the bacon so to speak. I am looking very closely at the Savage varmint and target rifles that are are from $600-1200. I like their precision target receivers but they are only single shot - which under most circumstances is ok.

I have one of those cheap-assed Leapers scopes.
It is a fixed 4X power with a BDC. For the price, well under $40, it is surprisingly accurate. A while ago I was hitting a board about 6 x 18 from 400 yards with it. How many times I missed I don't know; most of my attention was on the paper target next to it.
Let me know via IM if you want it, I've found that I prefer Iron Sights on my M16.
