    LD,

One point to remember is doubling up plugs and muffs is not a straight addition on protection. If you use 33 NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) rated plugs and 33 NRR rated muffs you don't get to add the NRRs together to get a 66 decibel reduction. The most you get is about 41 decibel reduction by using the two combined.

The two most important things are:

    1. Get the highest NRR rated plugs or muffs you can in the style you prefer.
    2. Get a pair comfortable enough to wear so you don't end up not using them at the range because they irritated the shit out of you.

I've got hearing loss in both ears, they both ring all the time, I wear hearing aids in both ears now..... take care of your hearing while you practice...if an emegency comes up one or two bangs wont hurt you....but the hundreds of thousands practice ones will... my $.02 .

Thanks Zimmy - that's good to know. I went poking around Cabela's yesterday, but the funny thing was that the expensive electronic muffs had a lower rating than the cheapo ones that I bought originally. So I decided to stick with what I have for awhile.

I've discovered that the comfort thing depends on the kind of earrings I wear more than anything. I just have to remember not to wear any big hoops to the range, or else take em out before I put the muffs on.

Altimeter has the exact same problem. I'm surprised he didn't mention it.

I'm sure there's a really good comeback joke in there somewhere involving muffs and plugs, but I just can't come up with one at the moment.

You're right. In light of the new rules, I edited/removed the photo I quoted.

Now, back to ears and hearing....
