I'll try to dig up a photo of an NCO in my platoon who reenlisted in North Korea. We held up the U.S. flag and conducted the ceremony a few feet across the border.![]()

I have never been to Korea, but my father was apparently in the Korean War, lying to enlist earlier than whatever the required age was at the time. I never even knew he was in the Army until as a teenager I happened upon his class A's in the back of my parents' closet. Then after I went to basic and graduated he told me that he had been in Korea and that was it. He mentioned the cold a couple of times, and that he had been a demolition expert with the combat engineers working mainly at night, which seems to fit as I don't think until recently I ever woke up one night to get a drink that he was not already awake and pacing the floor even though he went in to work at 0500. I forgot about his admission until the day I took my parents to the little infantry museum they have at Ft Stewart right before one of my deployments. I will never forget it. We walked thru the doors, and at the time they had a Chinese Infantry uniform on the back wall. Of all the things in that building, he stopped dead in his tracks way before we ever got to the uniform (I didn't have a clue what it was to be honest) and for the first time in my life I heard my father cursing under his breath. The easy going look that he always wore was gone and I could tell it had been replaced with just pure hate for those few moments. My mom jarred him back to the present and we carried on thru the museum. I don't know what unit he was with, but I do believe him, as he does not advertise the fact and has always taught me respect for those who have endured more than myself in the service.
Old thread but a goodThanks for sharing the story and hopefully he can loosen up a little bit and you two can share experiences. Lessons from the past are more than relevant on today's battlefield. AATW...

Here are a few pics of my time in Korea, few of my platoon mates and some of the DMZ, JSA and one from a Team Spirit sling load op. The picture of me and 2 other guys in the Squad combat endurathon was after we finished that night. Our squad came in 9th out of 41 squads. Not first but respectable at least!
Who knows maybe one of you limp lame lazy airborne crazy mf'ers will recognize your young self!

Hope I didn't come across as correcting you. I was just stating that my memory served me differently. Lord knows I have been wrong before. Christ, ask my wife she will tell you. LOL
Seriously though, I learned something knew. I never knew that you had to have a certain time in grade to retire at that grade. Is that for all ranks for just those with the stars? I had always figured if Congress approved the promotion for another star and you were pinned with it and then retired the next day that you would retire at that rank i.e. the highest rank obtained while in the service. That's some cool shit right there. You know it's a good day when you can kick back and say you learned something new.
