Default Korea revisited Pics & Posts

I see our newest member Teama was stationed on the DMZ in Korea. I know a lot of members here were stationed in Korea, so I thought I would start a thread for pics and stories about Korea.
I was stationed 9 miles SE of Pan Mun Jon in 60-61 with the 1st Cav, 3/40 Med Tk Bn Recon Plt, Camp Rose. I had a good Bro from the 82nd stationed on the DMZ with the 9th at same time. A couple times I was able to check out a Jeep, get him and spend some time at RC4. But we were on 24-7 alert at the time and it was tough to get any free time. This sign was on the South Edge of the Imjin Freedom Bridge.

I was in Korea on a priority tour in 68-69 priority higher than Viet Nam. I can't tell you why because then I would have to k**l you. The biggest industry in Korea at the time was the "Business" girls.AIRBORNE! GERONIMO!!

My father served time in Korea in the Corps. He warned me that Korea is colder than a witches tit in a brass bra and to stay away from there. Being as he grew up in the mountains in Pennsylvania, I took his advice.

5/20 Inf '91-'92 Camp Casey. We pulled the last "full' DMZ mission. We handed it over to 1/503 who got credit for the last DMZ rotation even though they only did 3 weeks.

Got to go to 2ID Scout/Sniper School, froze my ass off on Team Spirit, and spent 9 out of 12 months there in the field.

    Nice pics Recon.

I do not think I have any pics of my year there.

I was at Camp Bonifas from 2000-01.
I spent all my time in the MACHATOC "monitoring" our scouts.

I hear we have given it up to the ROK soldiers and they even had females there.

The smell in the Summer and the cold in the Winter were unforgettable.

I was there in 99-00. I will post some pics when I get home. Im sure it has changed since you were there, though. Camp Hialeah in Pusan was given back to the Koreans a few years ago.

Camp Rose was a pistol shot NE of Camp Pellham and RC4, which I think is now Camp Gary Owen. Camp Rose was given to the ROK's in the early to mid 70's. When I got there in Jan 60 there was 10" of snow on the ground and -10. The first night there, we had an Alert at 0300 hrs. I was an SP/4 at the time and the sqd was sent to a FOP on top of a small Mountain overlooking the highway along the Imjim. I had no cold weather gear. The Plt Ldr came by about an hour after the alert and asked me where my gear was. I told him I just got in that day and hadn't had time to go to the QM. He told me to get into a sleeping bag and sit in the Jeep. He said otherwise I would have frostbite by the time the alert was over. Cold, snow, wind in the winter, hot (stink - I quess) humid in the summer, and rain like hell in the fall. Very few paved roads when I was there. Many of the Camps had just got electricity. Camp Rose was running on generators up to a yr before I got there. We had a central shit house and showers, naturally it was clear across the compound. But we were just down the hill from the Mess hall and PX. All Our equipment was updated Korean War vintage. We spent more time in the motorpool repairing Jeeps than we did on the road. Still had a lot of unexploded ordnance, mostly mortar and artillery rounds. Several mine fields in the area that were fenced off with warning signs. After I made E-5 they sent me and my squad to the 1st Cav 8th Engr Bn for Demolition and Land Mine Warfare School. If unexploded ordnance was found, we would be notified, go out, identify it, secure the area and radio the Engrs. We would then stay there with the Engrs in case they needed our assistance, which they never did. But it was a fun school and good duty. I have the Certificate on my "I love me wall" but it was never entered in my 201?

Camp Greaves 2/98 - 2/99. Bco. 1-506 IN STANDS ALONE!!!

Of course I was NOTRI. Could see that big ass DPRNK flag from the front gate. Used to run the fenceline from time to time for PT.

All my pics (of which I have a bunch) are not scanned into the computer. Back when I was there we still had this goofy shit called FILM.

HHC 1/503 scouts Jan. 1993-Jan. 1994 and I also got the honors of doing Team Spirit. Will never forget the smell and how much I disliked that place.

    A short story......

My dad, Pappy 6 (508th ARCT, 50's) was a MSG on the DMZ during the tree cutting incident.

He was on the comms standing next the general who supervised the cutting down of the tree. The word was that if the NK tried to stop the tree cutting, bombs would have rained down upon them!

Here's a piece of Korea trivia...why is 2ID reception on Cp Casey called "The Turtle Farm"? And its not because the soldiers there are called "turtles". The name for the soldiers come from the location, not the other way around.

Second question. Easy one. Why are the concrete rain ditches referred to as "turtle ditches"?

    Discuss.

As for the shit ditches I was always told they were called that because the turtles got drunk and fell in them. I may be wrong, it has been 15 years since I was there and have tried like hell to forget the place.
