18th ABN Corps Recondo School Roll Call

Hey all, I thought I'd post in regard to the 18th Recondo School to see who here graduated from this particular course to see who remembers instructors like SFC Eddyburn and SGT Merchant from the mid-80's..

I graduated in Feb. '82. Nothing like waterborne ops in the Little River in Febuary!

I was an Instructor at Recondo School from Feb 84( and helped write the POI since it went from PNCO-Recondo to the new Recondo) till they raped us and made us teach PLDC in the summer of 85? 1SG Roreum & SFC Eddyburn remained in place then they started the 1 year SD from X amount of Bdes in Division. It was a rough transition but it eventually got better. I do remember the other SGT since I met him during the transition.

Then SFC Eddyburn was told he was going to be the 1SG for HHC XVIII Abn Corps (The CSM liked all of us). So the CSM asked Eddyburn who would be a good man to take your place and he said SSG (P) Welsh would be that man.....(ME)....but I had already requested a Special Assignment and was going to Turkey in Feb 86 and I had to go see the Commandant and the Corps CSM and they BS for awhile and the Commandant said how would you like to be the Senior Instructor at the Recondo Course. I said well SGM I would love to have that job, but I'm on orders to go to Turkey on a special assgniment.

So they asked about it a little and the Corps CSM said I can have those orders flagged and you could take the job. I told him I appreciate that, however, SGM, this is a really good job which will help my Career more so than going BACK to Recondo and I'm sure you both can understand that special assignments are hard to come by. (I knew dam well he could have pulled my shit, but I really did not want the job since the Corps CSM was the one that made us go teach PLDC since we were certified Instructors), so screw them, I WAS the best man for the job at THAT time since there was only 3 of us left on Bragg...but I did not want it then......so the CSM said your right it's time for you to move on SSG Welsh....and you have done a hell of a job Blah...Blah....

I never did Recondo school (I believe it was closed by the time I got to Bragg), but I completed the annual Scout Reconasaince Surveillance Course three times while I was in Scouts. I agree, the Little River is as cold as a witch's tit in a brass bra in the winter, especially when they had us swimming the river multiple times practicing rope bridges.

I remember both of them, i was Merchant's copenhagen dealer while out there.

Myself and Bushrat humped the same course. I was the one that bagged the racoon with the K-bar. Good eaten eh Bushrat?

I was in RECONDO class 2-84 from 11 May to 25 May 1984. I was 40 days into a 45 day FTX when they pulled me out of the field to attend the course. It did not take long to realize that you never wanted to be last on anything! I may be wrong but I was told that I was the first person from the 50th Sig to make it thru that course. Please let me know of any 50th Sig grads prior to May 1984.

Merchant went on to SF after his long stent of illness. Edyburn and Rorum both retired. Edyburn went to Southern Pines, NC and Rorum went to Peoria, ILL. SGT Tinsley and SGT Riotte went to be Drill SGT. SSG Angahofer went to 1/504. SGT Harvey went back to his COMMO Unit. SSG Sonymaker got out of the ARMY. I went to D 108th LRSD. Sgt Riotte and I both ended up in a LRSD Company in Germany. Then at Benning as a RANGER instructor. Then we both ended up in 10th MTN Div together, Hell I could not get rid of him LOL no really we are the best of friends to this day even now after ten years of retirement.
Just for the record, None of us ended up in that stupid Light Fighter School that took over the RECONDO Camp. Well thats all I have to report on the old RECONDO Staff. There were a few more instructors that their names have escaped my brain.

I don't believe I'm asking for this help BUT I NEED A CLOTH OD XVIII ABN CORP RECONDO PATCH...I had some???? I am designing my own version of what would be known as a shadow box and I do not want to use metal badges for any RECONDO PATCH.....CONTACT ME IF you know where I can get one....THANKS
