Default Intro from the Great State of Texas

    Hello All,

Thank you to all that serve and have served this great nation. I celebrated Memorial Day today by taking my wife and kids to the Flight Museum in Galveston, TX. What a great museum! They have a great Collection of War Birds to view. I highly recommend it.

My name is James and I live near Houston, TX. I'm actually closer to the community of Atascocita, TX and Kingwood, TX. I was in the Texas Army National Guard from 1996-2002. I joined when I was 17 on the split-option program. I served in HHB 1/133rd FA out of Beaumont, TX as a medic from 1996-1998. I then relocated to Houston with Det 1 HHB 1/133rd FA FiST Team. I was the only medic(E-4 Specialist) for our FiST team of about 50 guys or so. I've been out of the Guard for about 6 years now and I really miss it. I'm interested in joining the Guard again to get into an infantry unit. I've been eye-balling an LRS unit in Central Texas. I just don't know much about it right now and can't seem to find much info on those guys. For now, I'm going to join the Army Reserves and get my direct commission as a Registered Nurse. My dad (former TXARNG recruiter) advised me to use my education to get my commission. I'm taking his advice for now but I really don't want to get stuck in an Army nursing spot. I miss going to the field, getting dirty, practicing land nav and the such. After I experience the Army Reserves Nursing side of things, I plan on finding a "high-speed" infantry unit in the Guard. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this online community.

    James

    Outstanding -- and welcome.

Not sure how starting in the Medical Corps might hurt your chances of going to LRS unit. Something in the back of my mind is telling me that is is pretty hard to get out of the Nursing gig once you start in the Army -- but I don't really know.

You might want to get some more info on that prior to taking the step if you are really interested in becoming a Grunt.

You think it might be hard to get out of Nursing because it's a "cush" job or because Infantry units might think that I'm " Gaylord Focker"?

Welcoem aboard Doc. If you have questions about Medical please feel free to ask. I can tell you as a nurse you will not be able to go to LRS or anything similar to it. You may want to look at the Physician Assistant option.

I'm not wanting to stay a Nurse when I switch back to the Guard. I'm willing to go to mosQ for infantry and become an infantry officer if that's what I have to do. I hope that doesn't sound retarded?

I don't know if you'd be able to branch transfer out of medical after a direct commission. They're so short on medical officers, especially reserve ones, that they'd likely not allow it.

    I wouldn't count my chickens.

That being said, if you decide you want to go back to the line, you may be able to resign your commission and go back as enlisted.

I'd do alot of digging before you do anything that could end up permanant.

    Can't do it Doc.

Medical is a far different animal than the rest of the Army. They only way you can do that is if you get classified as a 70B.

Best route is to go ROTC. Be a top notch cadet and get airborne and air assualt while in college.

Then when you put in your top three branches for selection you will have a chance to get infantry.

If you don't get infantry you can try to trade with someone.

    A good resource is ArmyOCS.com
