    Default Hellp Identifying WWII Ribons/Medals

A widow from my church asked if I could help her with her late husband's medals/ribbons. Aside from the CIB, unit patch (150), what I'm guessing is a campaign medal under the yellow wings and his crossed rifles I'm a little in the dark. The handbook I have doesn't list the service ribbons. I'm going to do a little searching on the web but I figured I would stop here first. ( I know my headline is screwed up with the spelling, I can't edit it)

"He was a SOT-A Soldier doing exactly what SOT-A's do," his commander said, "fighting alongside his special forces teammates in the most difficult, dangerous places while carrying heavy loads of technical gear that saves lives of our forces and takes the lives of our enemies."

I believe the yellow thunderbird in the red patch and the swastika patch are 45th Infantry Division. The swastika version was pre WWII. It was changed for obvious reasons.

The Medal is the WWII Victory Medal. The ribbon on the left in the pic is the Good Conduct Medal. The other two you can find here: http://www.armyawards.com/awards.shtml
The large blue & yellow patch in upper right hand corner is the US Navy Amphibious Forces Patch, the one right below it is the 45th Inf, the one below it is the 86th Inf, the one to the left of it (blue with white 8 point star) is the 8th Service Command, to the left of it (Axe & Tree) is the 70th ID, the 8 with the arrow on the far left is the 8th Div. The one at the lower right hand corner of the pic (Red Diamond) is the 5th Div. Those I recognize off hand, the rest you can find by using a search engine.

The Red Patch with the bird is a Reserve unit (the Black Hawks IIRC). I had a friend who was in a CA unit in the 70-80's wearing that patch.

Isn't the "150" patch a boy scouts patch that denotes the troop?

The one on the right is the American Campaign Medal. Directly underneath the WWII victory medallion are two "ruptured duck" pins. They signify an honorable discharge from the WWII era military.

The middle one is tough. Can you get a better, closer up picture. The right edge of it matches the Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal, but the rest doesn't. How much is age damage?

The hatpin on the right is the Bronze Star Medal.

The blue and gold anchor, rifle, eagle patch is the US Army Amphibious Forces Patch.

Oh and the patch in the lower left with the swastika is not a 45th ID patch from pre WWII. That pre WWII patch was the same size and shape as the one with the phoenix on it, only instead of the bird there was a yellow swastika that was not tilted 45 degrees. It was however, changed for obvious reasons.

I was told every WWII CIB recipient was awarded the Bronze Star post VE.

    Is that accurate?

I know that they did it for the 101st but not sure if it was for everyone.

    Strait off the Army's Website:

    c. As a result of a study conducted in 1947, the policy was implemented that authorized the retroactive award of the Bronze Star Medal to soldiers who had received the Combat Infantryman Badge or the Combat Medical Badge during World War II.

I appreciate the help. That's a negative on the "150", it signifies the 150th Infantry Regiment he was assigned to. It was a National Guard unit.

    I'm working on the picture.

Yes, all WW II CIB recipients were awarded a Bronze Star Medal.

What state National Guard. That middle ribbon may be a state award.

The second pic you posted featurs repeats of several medals. The one directly above the full size WWII Victory Medal is the Europe/Africa/Middle East Campaign Medal with two campaign stars.

This leads me to believe that the swastika patch was captured from a German.

The wreath patch in the lower right of the second photo is a distinguished unit citation and was worn on the lower sleeve.
