    Default Long tab question

I was up in Wilmington at the court house for trial. I had finished and was waiting in line to pay for my parking when I saw a man in his 60's wearing a brown leather jacket with the Navy seal on the left breast pocket. I asked him where he served in the Navy and he stated that he was UDT and worked with the SEALs.
He states further that he was assigned as the Navy liason with 20th group in Maryland while they were scuba training. He went on to say that every SF group that trains has a navy advisor to assist during diving. It seemed very odd to me. I thought that the U.S.Army ran the scuba school in Key West.
I did not question further as I was unsure of my intell. Is this plausible? and is there still a UDT program or are they all SEALs now. My spider sense tells me his is full of shit.

Unless it has changed Key west is still run by army folks. I know that I had a major in 3rd group who went and trained seals in scuba stuff..but I don't know all the details. Also I think UDT is gone..could be wrong but I believe UDT was replaced by seal. But hey I stay in the air or on the ground not the water.

Possible, if the Navy is the proponent service for diving. I don't know. I do know that 11th Group had no navy advisor to assist during diving when I was there. We didn't have many dive teams, but still...

Navy is the proponent for diving. They have folks at Key West, but I don't remember how many.

Correct, the Navy is the Proponet Svc for all dive ops. Key West instructors are Army however there are always Navy personnel on site. The school is not only SCUBA but Re-Breather training as well.
I myself had to attend the Navy 3-M school while I was in the Army. I maintained all boats, motors, and ansillary equipment for 3rd Group. I spent my entire enlistment working in the D.L.S.M.F. (Scuba Locker)
Maybe he is full of Shit, however most guys woudn't know that the Navy is involved in all dive ops for other services.

Also, keep in mind that you say he was in his 60's. 1962 was 45 years ago.

If he's in his mid to late 60's...made even a good looking guy in his 70's, that could easily put him on the level.

Are you sure about that? I thought UDT-21 served in the late 60's in Vietnam along the Rung Sat Special Zone. I may be wrong...Maybe I have my history wrong...

    I found this:

On May 1, 1983, all UDTs were re-designated as SEAL Teams or Swimmer Delivery Vehicle Teams (SDVT). SDVTs have since been re-designated SEAL Delivery Vehicle Teams.

My memory isn't what it used to be, but we carried UDT guys to dive on buoy chains in '69 and '70. They dove on the chains to make sure they weren't rigged with charges before we picked them up. There's a documentary out about our work, and the narrator says they were SEALS, but I believe he's wrong and seem to remember they were UDT.

Let me restate my previous; my ego got ahead of itself. The documentary wasn't about us, it was about the CG in Vietnam, we just had a small part in it. In case you're interested I ripped the clip about us and you can see it here:

In the early 60's the Navy ran the school at Key West, I'm thinking the Army SF didn't take over the course until 1964 or so. I can't wear or apply for the new SF combat diver badge, because the Navy was running it when I went through it. :(

BTW: The term Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) includes rebreathers, etc. in the broad sense of the term.

Some may refer to it as "CCUBA" (Closed Circuit Underwater Breathing Apparatus).
